A journey through the rich tapestry of Indian flavours, in the heart of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.

MaaMadurai Street Food brings the great flavours of Madurai to the heart of Toongabbie, right here in Portico Plaza, opposite Woolworths. From fluffy idly and crispy dosai to Kothu Parotta, Seeraga Samba Mutton Biryani and Madurai Jigarthanda, every plate is our way of saying “Vaanga, Sapdalam” – come, eat with us.
In Tamil, “Maa” also means Great, and MaaMadurai celebrates Great Madurai – the bold taste, big-hearted people and ever-awake food streets of the temple city. We started this restaurant to recreate that same warmth in Sydney, serving authentic Tamil unavu made the way our families enjoy it back home.
In our kitchen, you will find familiar Madurai icons: Kothu Parotta smashed on a hot tawa, Kari Dosai rich with mutton gravy, Seeraga Samba biryani simmered slowly, and street favourites like Ulundu Vadai, bajji and Jigarthanda. Every dish is cooked fresh, with curry leaves, ghee and freshly ground masala capturing the loud, lively spirit of Madurai’s street food scene.
தூங்கா நகரத்தின் அறுசுவையை தூங்காப்பியில் ருசியுங்கள் !!!
In Tamil culture, virundhombal (cherishing guests) is at the
centre of this Great Madurai experience. Thirukkural reminds us
in the chapter on hospitality, விருந்தோம்பல்: Kural 82
“விருந்து புறத்ததாத் தானுண்டல் சாவா
மருந்தெனினும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று”
“Though food of immortality should crown the board,
Feasting alone, while guests go unfed, is abhorred.”
At MaaMadurai, we live by this kural – no guest should feel like an outsider. From the first “Vanakkam” at the door to the last sip of filter coffee or Masala Tea, we want you to feel like you are eating at your amma veedu (mother’s home).
Whether you grew up in Tamil Nadu or are tasting Madurai-style food for the first time, our goal is simple: to give you a bold, comforting saapadu that feels like a Great Madurai celebration every time you visit.
From quick lunches to long weekend dinners, MaaMadurai Street Food at Shop P34, 17–19 Aurelia Street, Toongabbie is your Great Madurai unavu veedu in Sydney.
